Smart home technology can prove incredibly useful when it comes to home security. When combined with security features such as CCTV or an intruder alarm, smart home automation systems make for the perfect smart home. It’s possible to control security systems using your mobile phone wherever you are; whether you’re on the other side of the world or simply working late. Not only is this a great way to ensure your home looks occupied when you’re not there by switching lights on and off, it will also provide you with peace of mind.

Smart home technology not only offers the capability to switch lights on and off when you’re out; you could also set or unset your alarm. We’ve all had situations where we’ve left the house and then remembered that the alarm wasn’t set. A smart alarm puts paid to this problem by enabling you to switch the alarm on and off remotely.

Last and by no means least, a smart doorbell offers a great enhancement to the security of your home. Smart doorbells are designed to let you see who’s at the door even when you’re not in – great for deterring potential intruders but also providing a useful way to communicate with delivery drivers or the postman!

Make your home as secure as possible by thinking like a burglar

Home security advice from FirstEye – alarm installation specialists in Leeds

Following on from our last couple of posts on home security, this week we’re going to round-up by covering how thinking like a burglar could actually help you safeguard your home.

Here are a few simple ways to deter thieves and reduce the risk of your home being targeted:

  • Install an alarm and make sure you have it serviced on a regular basis. Burglars can tell if an alarm hasn’t been serviced for a while or isn’t working.
  • Install motion sensor lighting at the side and rear of your property – illuminating the exterior of your home helps to put off thieves.
  • Make sure your calendar is out of sight of any windows or exterior doors: leaving it in view enables burglars to see when you’re going away on holiday.
  • Fit a cage to the inside of your letter box to prevent thieves hooking items from inside your home, such as car keys.
  • Install smart CCTV cameras: these provide a clear and visible deterrent; demonstrating to burglars that you take the security of your home seriously.
  • Never leave ladders or tools lying around outside and make sure your garage, shed or any outbuildings are fitted with robust locks or an alarm.
  • Always make sure front or side gates are kept closed: ideally a side gate should be fitted with a padlock and kept locked when not in use.
  • Be conscious of what you put in your bins: don’t leave packaging for expensive items on view and make sure personal documents are shredded before you recycle them.

Security solutions to suit all budgets and requirements

It goes without saying that installing an alarm and/or CCTV offers a great way to protect your home whilst demonstrating that you take security seriously.

Beat the burglars: don’t let them find what they’re looking for!

Security advice from FirstEye – the security installation specialists in Leeds

Following on from last week’s post, this week we’re going to focus upon what burglars are looking for and how to keep your valuables safe.

If the worst happens and a burglar manages to get into your home, the chances are they’ll want to steal as much as they can and then get away as quickly as possible. This is why small items such as jewellery and cash, or small electrical items such as mobile phones or laptops tend to be stolen the most. In addition, they might also be tempted to search your personal paperwork.

So what can you do to make it as hard as possible for them to find what they want? Here are a few ideas on how to beat the burglars and protect your valuables:

  • Never leave valuable items in sight of windows or exterior doors.
  • Don’t leave large suitcases or bags lying around: thieves use these to carry away as much as possible.
  • Don’t leave spare keys lying around or all your keys in one place. Burglars often look for spare keys so don’t label yours, or any spare keys you keep for your neighbours.
  • The best way to protect small items is to install a safe that’s fixed to a floor. Safes which aren’t fixed to the floor can be picked up and dropped to open them.
  • The next best thing to a safe is your loft. If you have valuables you don’t use or wear, keeping them in the loft is a great way to protect them as a burglar is unlikely to risk going up there.
  • There’s a misconception that hiding things in strange places is a good idea. However, a burglar will look for anything unusual and will try to uncover valuables by searching under the bed, inside drawers and even inside your sofa or mattress. In addition, this can make it more difficult to check what’s missing if the worst happens.

When it comes to burglary prevention is always better than a cure. Installing a security alarm is the best way to prevent burglary, providing a highly visible deterrent that will put off most thieves. Here at FirstEye we install residential alarm systems for homes of all sizes. Simple security choices to help you protect your home

Domestic security solutions installed in Leeds by FirstEye

As regular readers of our blog will know, here at FirstEye we take the security of our clients’ homes very seriously. We’re always looking for cost effective ways to help you improve home security and with this in mind, our next couple of blog posts will offer simple yet highly effective ways to deter thieves and prevent a break-in. If you’ve ever been burgled you’ll know how awful it is; not least in terms of loss of possessions which may be irreplaceable, but also because of emotional stress and damage to your property.

Sadly there’s not much which can be done to deter a very determined burglar, however there are a number of relatively simple steps you can take to put off any would-be thieves. In this week’s blog we’re going to focus upon how burglars scope out properties and what you can do to make it as hard as possible for them to get in.

Show that you take security seriously

Before attempting to break in to a property a burglar will look for weak points and signs that you’re not security conscious. Telltale signs include keys left in door locks, window locks with the keys inside and doors with a single Yale or cylinder locks. Bear in mind that if the front of your house shows that you don’t take security seriously, a burglar will assume that the back is equally unprotected.

It’s important to put a burglar off before they even try to break in so make sure that you:

  • make sure ladders are stored out of sight and not left lying around
  • install robust door and window locks
  • ensure overgrown shrubs and hedges aren’t providing places for burglars to hide
  • make sure fences are strong and secure – you could also consider planting thorny shrubs around the perimiter of your property
  • sheds and garages should be adequately secured
  • consider installing security lighting – not only does this provide a visible deterrent, it also ensures your home is illuminated at night
  • if there’s a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in your area, consider joining and then show that you’re part of it by clearly displaying a sticker
  • ask a friend or neighbour to remove post out of sight of doors and windows when you’re away
  • ensure your home always looks occupied by using timer switches on lamps/the radio/TV
  • if you’re going away, mow the front lawn before you leave – an unkempt garden can be a sign that a house is empty

Next week we’ll be focussing on what burglars look for and how to keep your valuable items safe.

Our advice on choosing security systems for homeowners with pets

Domestic security advice from specialist alarm installers in Leeds

Home security is important for all homeowners but if you have a dog or cat, your security system could be triggered by your four legged friend moving about. With this in mind, it can be tempting to choose not to have a security system at all. However, thanks to improvements in the security alarms available, having a pet no longer means you have to compromise on home security. Here’s our advice on ensure your home is secure and pet-friendly.

Domestic alarms installed by FirstEye

Installing a burglar alarm is cost-effective way to protect your home from theft, with statistics showing that around 60% of the burglaries attempted on homes with alarms fail. Nevertheless, many pet owners choose not to install an alarm because they’re worried that their pet could trigger it.

However, there are steps which can be taken to stop lively pets from accidentally setting off a burglar alarm. Many security alarm packages include a pet-friendly motion sensor; designed to use a range of technologies to assess the movement pattern, speed and temperature of whatever has triggered it, therefore ruling out pets. This means that the alarm can be set and you’ll be able to relax in the knowledge that your pets can safely move around the house.

Careful positioning of alarm sensors can also make a huge difference though. If your dog spends the majority of the day in the living room, for example, but has a habit of jumping on the sofa, make sure that any sensors are directed away from this particular area. In addition, don’t forget to ensure that sensors are placed as high as possible on the walls; at least five foot high is ideal. The best way to ensure alarm sensors are in the best position is to choose to have an alarm installed by a security professional.
