National Home Security Month 2018

Security systems installed in Leeds by FirstEye

October is National Home Security Month and we thought we’d help you make the most of it by focusing on a different aspect of home security over the next four weeks. National Home Security Month aims to increase awareness of the importance of home security and when you consider a burglary happens in the UK approximately every 40 seconds, it’s vital that awareness is increased.

Over 200,000 burglaries were carried out during the summer of 2017 alone and as more of us go on holiday and leave our homes unoccupied, the chances of being burgled increase. There’s also been an increase in thefts from outbuildings and garages as these are often used to store valuable items such as bikes and power tools. So what can you do to protect your home and possessions?

Home security advice from FirstEye

This week we’re going to focus on general home security, followed by security alarms, CCTV and wireless doorbells over each of the following three weeks.

Home security is incredibly important and whilst it’s vital that you have a range of security systems in place, such as an alarm, for example, there are lots of simple things you can do to improve the general security of your home:

  • Keep doors and windows locked: although this sounds like simple advice, you’d be surprised how many opportune thieves are able to enter a property through an unlocked door. Keep doors locked even when you’re in and make sure car keys etc. are stored out of sight.
  • Fitting timer switches to lamps, TVs and radios is a great way to help your home look occupied whilst you’re out, whilst asking a neighbour to remove post from by the front door is another effective way to deter thieves.
  • An overgrown garden or large trees and shrubs offer places to hide so take a good look at the outside of your home and make sure you’re not providing cover for thieves.
  • If you have an alarm, make sure the bell box is clearly visible from the street.
  • Installing security lighting over the front and back door is a cost effective way to improve security and will help you make you and your family feel safer when you return home at night.
  • Never, ever leave a door key hidden under a plant pot by the front door! This is the first place thieves will look and a key safe provides a secure alternative.

smart home security

The home security of the future is already here

Smart home security systems installed by FirstEye

These days it’s difficult to remember a time before technology touched most aspects of our lives. From shopping and talking to friends and family, through to health and fitness, there isn’t much that hasn’t been influenced or improved by advances in computer-based technology.

However, despite some pretty significant changes over the last couple of decades, the majority of us still use a key to unlock our front door in exactly the same way our grandparents did. The smart home has now moved from the realms of fantasy into reality though and increasing numbers of homeowners are turning to smart locks to help improve security.

Solutions for a smarter, securer home

As regular readers of our blog will know, here at FirstEye we have the expertise to install smart home systems, designed to control central heating, lighting, appliances, security alarms and more. Smart locks – a form of keyless door lock – are now forming a significant part of smart home security, offering a great way to further enhance the security of your home.

Smart locks are exactly like other smart home devices, designed to connect with other devices using wifi or Bluetooth connectivity. This can be done in a number of ways, such as through a special key fob or via a mobile phone app. When the phone or key fob is placed near the lock, the door will automatically unlock, eliminating the need to rummage around in your pockets or bag looking for your keys in the dark!

One of the most useful features of smart locks is the ability to allow temporary access to friends and family whilst you’re away – if you need someone to let themselves in and feed the cat, for example. All you have to do is send them a temporary access code, designed to be active for a set period which will become invalid when you return home.

Is your small business protected from the risk of crime?

Security solutions for small businesses

If your business is small but perfectly formed, the chances are that you’ve invested an awful lot of your own time, energy and money into ensuring it’s a success. However, even though you’ve gone the extra mile to ensure your business gets off to a good start, it’s important to think about whether you’ve done everything you can to prevent criminals undermining all that hard work.

With this in mind, we thought we’d take a look at some of the ways small businesses can protect themselves from the risk of crime:

  • Take control of access: Being broken into is probably the biggest security concern for most small businesses. Replacing stolen stock, personal belongings and office equipment can easily add up to a huge bill. Making sure all windows are protected by robust locks is a good place to start, whilst you should also keep a careful record of who has keys. If yours is the type of business which doesn’t rely on customers walking in, an access control system can prove highly beneficial. A range of access control systems are available, with options to suit all budgets. Not only does access control provide you with increased security, managing keys becomes a thing of the past!
  • Make sure you’re visible: Security lighting offers a cost effective way to protect your business. The sight of security lights is often enough to deter criminals and will help to draw attention to your premises if a crime is taking place. It’s important to make sure that your security lights wont affect your neighbours though so it’s important to plan their locations carefully.
  • CCTV offers an unbeatable way to protect your business premises, with camera systems suitable for interior and exterior use. CCTV can be used to prevent and detect crime, whilst also providing valuable evidence should the worst happen. Small businesses often only need a couple of cameras and we’re happy to offer advice on the best system for you.
  • Monitored alarms: Monitored alarms help to deter intruders from attempting to enter a property and if a break in happens, will ensure the police are on the way. It is important that an alarm system is designed, installed and maintained by a specialist security company such as FirstEye and again we are always happy to provide our customers with advice.
