Is your home as safe and secure as it could be?

Security advice for homeowners in Leeds

Whilst there’s no doubt that installing a burglar alarm is one of the very best ways to protect your family and home from the risk of theft and intruders, it’s also very important to take a close look at all the possible places of entry to your home to ensure that they are secure.

Although the majority of burglaries are carried out on an opportunistic basis, there are cases where burglars watch a property and plan their break-in in advance. With this in mind, ensuring that your home looks occupied and lived-in around the close is vital and by ensuring all possible entry points are difficult to access, burglars are much more likely to disregard your home and try somewhere else instead.

Things to remember:

  • Are the outside areas of your home well-lit during the hours of darkness?
  • If you’re out or away on holiday is it obvious that your home is unoccupied?
  • Do you switch all your lights on, or leave them all off if you’re out, making it obvious that your home is empty?

Simple yet effective security deterrents

There are number of relatively simple things you can do to help deter intruders and exterior security lighting is a cost-effective way to illuminate the outside areas of your home. Two types of security lights are available; either lights which turn on and off when movement is detected, or outside lights which have to be turned on and off manually at the switch. Whichever option you choose, security lighting is a relatively low-cost way to help protect your home when it’s dark outside.

Although timer switches designed to switch inside lights and lamps off at regular times are a good idea, to be really effective it’s important to  have lights which turn on an off irregularly – just as if you were at home. Home automation is the ideal solution to this and by changing the light switches in your home to automated versions, you’ll be able to turn the lights on and off at random times, no matter where you are in the world!

It goes without saying that a working, reliable burglar alarm is an essential piece of kit and although the fake bell boxes which are widely available can help, there really is no substitute for the real thing.
